Perceptions and Motivations Around Cleaning in America

System4 IPS • Jun 28, 2021

Have your thoughts and actions surrounding cleanliness changed in the past 12 months? Probably yes. You're not alone.

People are wondering:

  • Which cleaners are most effective for sanitizing and disinfecting?
  • Are any natural cleaning products effective but also pet safe?
  • What are the best non-toxic cleaners today?

In this article, you'll learn about products, attitudes and messaging that can help answer these questions.

Cleaning has been transformed. It's not just a task, it's become a protocol, a method, a mission across every industry sector.

The importance of a properly cleaned home or workplace has escalated to new levels.

How Our Thinking Has Changed

What we think about cleaning has changed. It's evolved from being a chore to being a mandatory part of our day. Heck, it's happening throughout the whole day. From hand-washing to disinfecting high touch surfaces, it's all day, every day.

These behaviors have become permanent for many. When that happens, perceptions shift.

Survey says...

According to a new survey conducted on behalf of American Cleaning Institute (ACI), 70% of Americans view cleaning as a way to ensure the health and safety of themselves and their families, compared to only 30% of respondents who view cleaning as just a chore.

Americans cited the primary motivation to clean was to disinfect and kill germs, a significant shift from 2018 when only 7% of Americans reported cleaning as a way to prevent the spread of germs and illness.

To respond to this transformational thinking, the ACI has launched a new campaign called Cleaning is CaringTM.  This campaign is a public service announcement communicating the value of cleaning.

Cleaning Across Generations

How does Gen Z compare to Baby Boomers in terms of cleaning behaviors and products preferences?

Brand ambassador, Shelley Webb of Intentional Caregiver, breaks down the differences amongst the generations. During this age of COVID-19, she wants products that sanitize. As a participant in Good Housekeeping's "Discover Cleaning: Inside and Out Summit", Shelley confirmed that vinegar does not sanitize.

“We could see natural products being used for those day-to-day ad hoc spot-cleaning needs, but when it comes time to have to kill germs — such as flu season or those deep-cleaning needs — we’ll see them revert to more traditional formulas.” Rebecca Cullen, Mintel
